About Door County

Door County's natural beauty has worked its magic on artists for over a century, nurturing their creativity and inspiring their work. Located on a 75-mile peninsula and surrounded by the waters of Green Bay on the west and Lake Michigan on the east, Door County has more than 300 miles of picturesque shoreline, sandy beaches, rocky bluffs and large tracts of undisturbed woodlands. Ten working lighthouses still act as senties to its harbors and 40 islands.

Tourists first came to Door County in the 19th Century on schooners before there were roads. Much of Door County's beauty and character has since been preserved in county and state parks, wildlife refuges, private preserves, sanctuaries, and trusts. Door County emerged as an art colony early in the 20th Century.

Throughout the quaint harbor side towns and interior landscape dotted with picturesque farms and orchards, quality art galleries and studios reflect Door County's reputation for high-caliber cultural events. The rich performing arts scene–from classical and jazz music, to renowned theater troupes–garners national attention.

Door County's state and county parks offer some of the best hiking and biking opportunities to be found in the Midwest.  Golfing, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, cherry picking, shopping and scores of festivals go hand-in-hand with fine restaurants and relaxing accommodations.
